Math Newsletter – Week of September 24-28, 2018
unit 2 on Multiplication and Division. During this unit of study, students will learn how to use repeated addition and arrays to solve multiplication problems of single digit numbers, how to find the quotient when solving a division problem, how to use multiplication and division to solve word problems, how to find an unknown whole number in a multiplication or division problem by using the inverse operation, learning the communtative, associative and distributive properties of multiplication, multiplying by multiples of ten, and continuing to study bar graphs and beginning to learn how to measure to the nearest ¼ inch with a ruler. Please make sure you are practicing multiplication facts at home. We took our unit test today and will finish the test up tomorrow. Wednesday we will be starting Unit 2. Here is a link to the covered standards in Unit 2: https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Frameworks/Unit-2-3rd-grade-parent-letter.pdf
This week we will be wrapping up Unit 1 and be reviewing all week
The unit test will be Monday (9/17/18) Things you can review at home: 3 digit addition and subtraction, rounding to the nearest ten and hundreds, graphing Thank you for coming to Curriculum night! I enjoyed meeting you and I look forward to working with you throughout the year to help your child have a successful year :)
This week we will continue working on place value through the thousands. We will work with base ten blocks and how to write numbers in standard (261), extended (220 + 60 + 1) and word forms. (two hundred sixty one). We will also be learning the difference between value (how much a digit is worth) and place value (where a digit sits in a multi-digit number). We will also be comparing numbers. We will also be reviewing adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers. I was out with a sub this morning during Math for a training so I will send homework home tomorrow. It will only be one sheet this week. Additionally, we will have a quiz later on this week. What does our math class look like?
We start the morning with whole group warm-up activities. The bulk of our time is spent with me teaching small group instruction to each math group while the rest of the class is working in rotations. Students will be working in different rotations each day. Rotations include interactive notebook examples, problem solving in their journals, worksheets, games, and interactive activities. All students were given a new account with Prodigy. Unfortunately, we will not have Ten Marks this year as Amazon is doing away with it. In addition students will use iReady math component throughout the year as well. All students keep examples of the standards they are working on in their interactive notebooks. They should be bringing these notebooks home for review each week. Students should also be bringing home their agendas and CJ's each day and bringing them back to school each morning. Please check the agenda for homework and initial the agenda when the homework has been completed. Here is a link to the standards we will be learning in the next weeks: https://www.georgiastandards.org/Georgia-Standards/Frameworks/Unit-1-3rd-grade-parent-letter.pdf Homework will start this week. All homework is due no later than Friday! We have been working on creating, interpreting, and making comparisons with tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. We will finish up graphs by looking at line plots. Graphs will be studied throughout the year and will appear on most of the unit assessments. This week we will begin working on place value through the thousands. I am so excited to be your child's math teacher for 3rd grade!
We are reviewing bar graphs, picture graphs and tally charts this week. Please use this Padlet to review multiplication facts with your child. padlet.com/watkinskr1/mult I ask that you spend 5 minutes each day reviewing multiplication facts as we will begin having timed quizzes in class.
