Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend! Report cards will be sent home on March 20, 2019. Spelling- We are working on sorts 28, 29 and 30 in spelling. We will focus on sort 29 this week. On March 29, a spelling quiz will be given on 20 words from the 3 different lists. Reading- This week, we will be learning about the characteristics of fables, folktales and myths. We will be learning how to identify the central message, moral or lesson from these stories. Writing- We will continue to work on opinion writing. Students are reading two articles about the same topic written from two different points of view. Students are then forming their own opinion about the topic using evidence from the articles to support their own point of view. Grammar- We will continue reviewing compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). We will be introducing subordinating conjunctions. A subordinating conjunction is used to link a subordinate clause (also known as a dependent clause) to the main clause (also known as an independent clause). An example is, Keep your hand on the wound until the nurse tells you to take it off. Science - We are beginning our final science unit on Heat. Students will be learning about sources of heat energy, carrying out experiments using different tools including thermometers, and understanding that heat transfers from hotter to colder areas until the temperatures even out. Milestones- There are several wonderful resources available to help your child prepare for the Milestones assessment in April. Below is a link to a Milestones study guide online that explains the test and gives some sample problems. http://www.gadoe.org/Curriculum-Instruction-and-Assessment/Assessment/Documents/Milestones/Study-Resource%20Guides/Milestones_StudyGuide_GR03_11-16.pdf Our school has purchased Coach Digital which gives access to Milestones preparation materials. https://www.coachdigital.com/org/02042377 Username: This will be your child’s lunch number or the number he or she uses to login to launchpad.
