I hope you enjoyed your long weekend! Tuesday (January 22nd) is the 100th day of school!! If your child would like to dress up as if they are 100 years old they may 😊 Spelling- Sort 19, 20, 21. Focus on sort 21 this week. Students will have a spelling quiz this Friday! Reading- We will continue looking at various passages to identify text structures: description, main idea, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and sequencing. This week we will be focusing on problem and solution and cause and effect text structures. Writing- We will continue working on our informational writing pieces where students introduce a topic, develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details, use linking words and phrases to connect ideas within categories of information and provide a concluding statement or section. We will also be reviewing constructive responses from the beginning of the year (TEACH). Grammar- We will be going over comparative and superlative adjectives. Social Studies- We are starting our unit on Colonial America. Students will be learning about the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern colonies. At the end of the unit students will be able to describe the physical geography of the colonies, identify key people and their roles in each colony, and give examples of how trade was used. We will be completing each of our units of study and finalizing grades over the next few weeks in preparation for the 2nd quarter ending and report cards being sent out. There will be no homework this week as we approach the Winter Break. Please remind to students to return their Sign and Return papers they received this past Thursday. Reading- This week, we will review identifying the author’s point of view, text features, and the main idea of nonfiction texts. We will spend some time doing fun Winter activities. Grammar- This week, we will review what we have learned about verb tenses, types of sentences, and reference materials such as the encyclopedia, thesaurus, and the dictionary. Grammar- This week, we will continue learning about reference materials, including uses of a dictionary, encyclopedia, thesaurus, world wide web or internet, atlas and almanac. We will have a grammar test on December 7th. This grammar test will include verb tenses (past: ed to end of words, present: sometimes adds s to the end of words, future: adds will before the verb), irregular verbs, reference materials, and types of sentences. Examples include: declarative- gives a statement (ends in a period) interrogative- asks a question (ends in a question mark) exclamatory- shows a lot of feeling (ends in an exclamation point) imperative- gives a command (ends in a period or exclamation point) Grammar (blue group)- Relative pronouns and Relative Adverbs. This is an election day so we will be eating in our classroom and lunches will be brought to students who identified that they needed lunch. As the weather gets colder please make sure your child comes to school with appropriate apparel for recess. Reading- This week students will finish working on finding text features in nonfiction texts. We will be going over titles, headings, timelines, table of contents, photographs, subheadings, captions, diagrams, labels, charts, tables, maps, bold/highlighted/italic words, textbox/sidebars, bullets, glossaries, and indexes. Students will identify how these text features help them better understand a text. Students should take home their reading interactive notebooks and study the text features that are pasted in them. We will begin learning how to identify the author’s point of view of nonfiction texts. We will also identify our own point of view. Students are encouraged to dress in an outfit to represent a storybook character and to bring the book with them to read to a kindergarten class. A student representative from each class will be voted upon for best outfit and the winners will participate in a third grade character parade. The winner for the grade level will receive a prize.

We will be discussing why there was a need for exploration, and introducing the explorers Christopher Columbus (Spain), John Cabot (England), Vasco Nunez de Balboa (Spain), Jacques Cartier (France), Hernando de Soto (Spain), and Henry Hudson (Netherlands). During this unit, students will be learning about 6 different explorers and how they adapted, or failed to adapt to the various physical environments they traveled, as well as their accomplishments, and cooperation and conflict with the Native Americans. Please study the Social Studies interactive notebook with your child each night. There will be a test on each of these explorers on Thursday, November 15th. We will be starting with informational writing next week. Science- We will be wrapping up our unit on pollution this week. Students will obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the effects of pollution (air, land, and water) and humans on the environment. Students will explore, research, and communicate solutions such as conservation of resources and recycling of materials to protect plants and animals. Volunteers-Thank you for all you do to help Dolvin students. However, due to the Iowa Assessments next week, Dolvin will not have any volunteers (in all grade levels) in the building until after 12:00 p.m. from Monday, October 22nd through Friday October 26th.
